Srinagar (Jammu Kashmir): Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today elected its president Mehbooba Mufti to head the party for the third time amid the crises in the party.
PDP spokesman Suhail Bukhari said that Mehbooba Mufti has unanimously re-elected as the party president for a period of three years.
"Her name was proposed by senior leaders Mr G N L Hanjura and seconded by Mr Khurshid Alam. Senior leader Mr A R Veeri was the chairman of the party election board," Bukhari said.
The elections were held at the Fair View government residence of Mehbooba Mufti in the Gupkar area of Srinagar.
The three-year term of Mehbooba as the party president ended on October 31 last year but fresh elections as per the spokesman were not held due to COVID–19 pandemic.
Mehbooba has been the party president since 2016, after succeeding her father Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, who passed away in January 2016.
The spokesman said that the members of the electoral college from Kashmir and Jammu provinces voted to elect the party president in Srinagar and Jammu respectively.
He said that in Jammu Surinder Choudhary was the Returning Officer for Jammu whereas Satpal Singh Charak was Observer.
Political observes said that Mehbooba has a difficult time ahead to wade through the crises her party is facing after the abrogation of Article 370.
Most of the senior leaders have left the party and joined Apni Party of former PDP minister Altaf Bukhari.
Three of the PDP leaders including Mehbooba's uncle Sartaj Madni, former PDP spokesman Nayeem Akhtar are in detention, and PDP youth president Waheed Para is in jail accused of being involved in supporting militancy.
Recently, PDP general secretary and former legislator Peerzada Mansoor Hussain resigned from the party citing political and personal reasons.
